Bleak prospect for the climate

Independent, 4 February 2015:

Michael McCarthy is cautiously optimistic about the possibility of a deal on climate change in Paris this coming December, I suspect because the consequences of failure are too awful to contemplate (Nature Studies, 3 February). However, the “Big Players” are not expecting anything.

Climate change did not even figure at Davos among the 20 issues * that most concern the chief executives of global companies, while both Shell and Exxon have already written to shareholders reassuring them that nothing meaningful will come out of Paris.

Our own government could prove influential in persuading developing nations to adopt low carbon growth, but has undermined its credibility with its mindless support of fracking. In any event, anything that is agreed will be vetoed by Tony Abbott or Vladimir Putin. Realistically, the prospects are bleak.
